Have you seen some of these gorgeous parcels of goodness and nuttiness scattered on the ground in the park or the woods this Autumn? What a waste!!
Don’t leave these beauties for the squirrels – spend an absorbing time
collecting the rounded gems with their shiny brown shells – which can be a pretty addictive process!
Take them home and cook them any which way you want- over an open fire (as the song goes), roasted in an oven, grilled, boiled or even microwaved.
Whichever way you cook them make sure you....
Give them a really good wash
Use a sharp knife to cut a small “X” in the skin.
After cooking press nuts in a towel to split skins and peel.
Roasting on an open fire
Put chestnuts in a cast-iron frying pan, laid flat sides down,
5 minutes in the embers, turn and back on the coals
Roast in the oven
Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F)
Put on a baking sheet
Put in the centre of the oven for 15-20 mins.
Move around occasionally during cooking
Boil on the hob
To add a little extra yumminess you can sprinkle over cinnamon and roll in a bit of melted butter!
Whichever way you like them we hope you really enjoy them – don’t let those squirrels get them first!!
