    Ferry Fun in Cornwall

    September 1, 2017

Every Cornish harbour town is subtly different, with unique boutique shops and eateries, its own style, whether relaxed and grounded Looe, stripes and slacks of the sailing fraternity in St Mawes, foodies in Padstow, art-buffs of St Ives or the great ships of Falmouth which define each town, so if you have been to one you have a whole host to explore!  Wherever you go, you will find a great day out, and nearly always a great, cheap way of exploring is via the local river/sea ferry which usually sails to surrounding towns from the quay.

    Hop-over the other side

There are different lengths of trips, with varying prices, but for a few pounds there’s trips from one side of the harbour to the other:

    • Fowey to Polruan (or car ferry to Bodinnick)

    • Padstow to Rock

    • Falmouth to Flushing

    • Looe (East and West)

If you take this option, of course, there is an additional perk of another place to visit, usually with a few less visitors (but not always!) and with a guaranteed fantastic view of the town you’ve just left!

    Round the harbour

Pay just a pound or two more for a harbour tour and benefit from local information from your guide.  These men/women enjoy giving all the latest news and information as they taxi you around the harbour.  They can show you the yachts and homes of the rich and famous, historic land marks and all sorts of titbits. These talks can be entertaining as well as informative!

    Venture out

For those intrepid folk, there are often trips further afield, but if you think you may like to do this please ensure you take a warm jumper and a waterproof, even on the hottest day, as a sea breeze can be pretty chill!   Regular ferry trips go to the following destinations:

    • Fowey - Lostwithiel

    • Fowey - Mevagissey

    • Fowey – Looe

    • Looe – Polperro

    • Looe – Mevagissey

    • Falmouth – St Mawes

    • Falmouth – Truro

    Have fun!

Whichever trip you decide to try, enjoy the fresh sea air and magnificent views, then take an easy drive back home to Tregolls Farm where a mug of hot chocolate (in the winter) or a glass of prosecco (in summer) will aid relaxation before a well-earned good night’s rest.
